Badwater
It wasn't as good as it had the potential to be. I know I say that a lot, but that's because so many times I can see what the author is aiming for, but they just don't quite make it to where they're trying to get.It would help if the dialogue between the hiker and the object was a bit snappier. It just felt a bit flat-footed, pardon the pun. Properly done, it would have added to the story and evoked a reluctant snicker.
The ending, even though the groundwork was laid for it, almost felt like it belonged in a different story. You were expecting the story to be about one thing, but suddenly it was about something else. Now, while in most cases that's a good thing, in this story it just didn't work as well. It felt less like a planned change, and more like an abrupt "Eh, I didn't like where I was heading with this, so I'm gonna suddenly do this instead."
Still, for 23 pages, it was an entertaining enough read, and I definitely don't regret checking it out.
